Fasting Guidelines

What Is the Faithful Fast?

The Faithful Fast is our church family's commitment to seek God together every Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. during our July, the opening month of Faithful journey.

Fasting is not about proving our devotion or earning God's favor. Jesus has already secured our acceptance through His finished work on the cross. Instead, fasting is a way to humble ourselves before God, turn our hearts toward Him, and make room for Him to work in us.

Whenever we deny ourselves something we desire, we remind ourselves that God is our greatest need and our greatest satisfaction.

What Should I Fast?

Prayerfully ask God what He is leading you to surrender.

A meaningful fast is giving up something that is good and permissible, but has become something you naturally depend on, enjoy, or crave.

Examples include:

  • Food (one meal, multiple meals, or a Daniel-style fast)

  • Coffee or soft drinks

  • Social media

  • Television or streaming

  • Video games

  • Smartphone use outside of work or emergencies

  • Shopping or unnecessary spending

  • Other forms of entertainment

The goal is not simply to give something up. The goal is to give more attention to God.

What Should I Not Fast?

A biblical fast is not giving up something that is already sinful.

For example:

  • Gossip

  • Pornography

  • Drunkenness

  • Lying

  • Bitterness

  • Sexual immorality

God calls us to repent of these things every day, not just during a season of fasting.

What Do I Do During the Fast?

Every time you miss what you've given up, let it become a reminder to pray.

Use those moments to:

  • Read Scripture.

  • Pray for yourself and others.

  • Listen for God's direction.

  • Thank Him for His grace.

  • Worship Him.

Replace distraction with devotion.

If You Choose to Fast from Food

If you are fasting from food:

  • Drink plenty of water.

  • Use meal times as prayer times.

  • If you have a medical condition, are pregnant, nursing, or have dietary concerns, choose another type of fast or consult your doctor before fasting.

God is after your heart, not your harm.

Remember

Fasting does not change God; fasting changes us.

As we lay down temporary comforts, we make room for God to deepen our faith, strengthen our obedience, and shape us into people who are fully surrendered to Him.

"Lord, make us faithful."
